After the event M L Yeung stated that his instructions from the outside barrier were to ride his mount in a conservative manner. Trainer T P Yung confirmed the instructions and said he issued such instructions as FREE PONY had raced in a disappointing manner when ridden in a forward position at its previous race starts in Hong Kong.

Began only fairly, raced behind midfield on the inside, saved ground on turn, made good progress early in straight, peaked 150M, ran on evenly to the line.
