Incident Report
When questioned, K De Melo stated that his instructions were to hold an on-pace position and lead if the pace was not too strong. He said in the early stages when positioned to the inside of SELF IMPROVEMENT, the rider of SELF IMPROVEMENT Apprentice P N Wong showed intent on continuing forward to cross. He said he was of the opinion that had he continued to persist to hold the lead this would result in the pace being too fast and therefore he elected to allow SELF IMPROVEMENT to cross. Trainer W Y So confirmed the instructions issued and stated that given the early stages of the event were run outside of standard time he would have preferred for MASK RIDER to hold the lead. After considering Jockey De Melo’s explanation, the Stewards found the tactics adopted by him were reasonable in the circumstances.
