Began well from gate 1, raced in midfield on the inside, 2 wide from 600M, 2-1/2L back turning in, no clear run early in straight, cleared 150M, finished off strongly to score.

Jumped only fairly. After the 700 Metres was steadied to avoid INNO CENTURY when that runner shifted out after being awkwardly placed close to HAYDAY which gave ground after being crossed by SPICY KNUCKLES.

Bumped at the start. After the 200 Metres C L Chau dropped his left rein for a number of strides. After the event, C L Chau reported that from his wide barrier he was obliged to race wide and without cover in the early stages. He said as a result after the 800 Metres he allowed his mount to stride forward to race outside the leader to avoid having to race wide. He added as a consequence SOLAR RIVER was left without a finishing effort in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Away with them, raced in 2nd early, 2 wide, allowed rival to cross 900M, sat 1-1/2L behind the leader in the middle stages, found rail approaching 650M, saved ground on turn, kept on well in straight to make frame.

From the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Jumped well from the widest draw, sent forward to take the lead, led by 1/2L turning in, kept on well in straight but unable to hold off the first two close home.

After the event, L Ferraris reported that his intention was to lead but when SPICY KNUCKLES and SOLAR RIVER went forward in the early stages he was obliged to allow those runners to cross when the pace of the event was being run inside of standard time. He added as a result COLONEL did not finish the race off strongly in the Home Straight and he was of the opinion that COLONEL races best when being able to dictate the lead. Trainer M Newnham confirmed the advice of Jockey Ferraris. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Average to begin, raced slightly behind midfield on the inside, 2 wide after passing 850M, angled out 400M, very wide into straight, finished off strongly to take 2nd, just beaten by a narrow margin.

After the event, M Chadwick reported that his instructions were to go forward and lead if the pace was not too strong. He said in the early stages when caught wide SPICY KNUCKLES raced keenly and as a result he elected to continue forward to cross runners to his inside to avoid racing wide.
