Crowded shortly after start, positioned 3 lengths behind the leader on the middle track, made no progress final 400M. (See Racing Incidents.)

From a wide barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages. Sent for sampling post-race.

Made contact shortly after start, raced in 3rd, 2-3/4L back at 400M, hard ridden after passing 400M but only showed limited response, weakened final furlong.

When questioned regarding his riding A Badel stated that he was given no specific instructions other than to settle his mount where comfortable. He said whilst WINNING OVATION jumped well he had observed a number of runners to his inside including DROMBEG BANNER and HEALTHY HAPPY were showing intent to go forward and race in the lead. He said when these runners showed superior pace in the early stages he elected to remain racing to their outside other than contesting the lead. He added after travelling some distance he contemplated allowing WINNING OVATION to go forward to cross runners to his inside but he was concerned that the rider of DROMBEG BANNER would contest the lead and for this reason he elected to remain racing wide and without cover for the majority of the event where his mount was travelling comfortably. After considering his explanation the Stewards found the tactics adopted by Jockey Badel were reasonable in the circumstances. Sent for sampling post-race.

Jumped only fairly, raced slightly behind midfield on the stands' side, inconvenienced near 650M, 3 to 4 lengths back at 400M, kept on one-paced to the line.

Made contact shortly after start, positioned 2 to 3 lengths behind the leader in the middle of the track, finished off well to take 2nd without threatening the winner.

Began awkwardly and bumped, raced behind midfield on the middle track, hard ridden approaching 300M, kept on same pace to the line.

Bumped start, raced towards rear on the stands' side, made no impression final 400M.

Bumped shortly after the start. When questioned Z Purton stated that after travelling a short distance he elected to shift to the inside of DROMBEG BANNER with the intention of holding a position one-off as he had expected JOHANNES BRAHMS to shift to the rail. He said when JOHANNES BRAHMS held its position one-off and DROMBEG BANNER then shifted in slightly he was obliged to check his mount near the 1100 Metres when crowded between JOHANNES BRAHMS and DROMBEG BANNER. Z Purton was fined the sum of $2,000 for using the whip on consecutive occasions in 2 consecutive strides after the 200 Metres.

Bumped on jumping, raced in midfield on the stands' rail, 2 to 3 lengths back at 400M, kept on evenly to take a place, no threat to the first two.

L Hewitson reported that from the outside barrier he was instructed to ride the horse in a conservative manner in the early stages.

Made contact shortly after start, raced better than midfield on the middle track in the early stages, peaked on run approaching 500M, weakened thereafter.

R Kingscote reported that from a wide barrier he was instructed to ride the horse in a conservative manner in the early stages. Trainer M Newnham confirmed those instructions.

Bumped and unbalanced shortly after start, raced at rear throughout, never a factor.

A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to have bled from both nostrils. Before being allowed to race again, JOHANNES BRAHMS will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
