When questioned H Bentley explained that over the concluding stages his mount did not feel comfortable in its action and as he was concerned with the horse’s welfare he elected not to ride it out over the concluding stages. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race which included an endoscopic examination showed a substantial amount of mucus in the horse’s trachea. Given the manner in which the horse weakened over the concluding stages, the Stewards ruled that FLYING FORTRESS will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination before being allowed to race again.
