Began only fairly, positioned 2 lengths behind the leader on the stands' side, no clear run until final 200M, finished off evenly.

Near the 150 Metres, LUCKY BANNER, which was giving ground, was steadied when crowded by LUCKY TOUCH (J McDonald) which shifted in. J McDonald was reprimanded. After the event, J Moreira stated that in the early stages he had to make some use of his mount to cross runners to his inside and take up a position outside the lead. He added in the Home Straight LUCKY BANNER gave ground and after being crowded near the 150 Metres did not finish the race off thereafter. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

At declaration time, B Avdulla was declared as the rider of both BRAVE WITNESS and LAKESHORE HERO. It was established that B Avdulla had a firm commitment to ride BRAVE WITNESS. As such, the Stewards permitted H Bowman to be substituted as the rider of LAKESHORE HERO. For this declaration error, Trainer D J Hall was fined $2,000. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Slowly away, raced towards rear of the main group, 6 lengths back at 400M, made no progress thereafter.

Noted to have blood in the mouth on arrival at the Start, was examined by the Veterinary Officer and passed suitable to race. From the outside barrier was shifted across behind runners in the early stages.

Jumped only fairly, raced towards rear on the stands' side, moved closer in the middle stages, unable to obtain clear run until final 100M, finished off strongly to take 2nd. (See Racing Incidents.)

Jumped awkwardly and lost ground. Throughout the early and middle stages raced keenly and refused to settle. The performance of CALIFORNIA STAR, which finished tailed out, was considered unacceptable. Before being allowed to race again, CALIFORNIA STAR will be required to perform to the satisfaction of the Stewards in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race found that horse to have sustained a minor abrasion to the left front pastern.
