Jumped only fairly. Approaching the 200 Metres was checked to avoid PATCH OF TIME when endeavouring to obtain a narrow run to the inside of that horse and as a result made contact with SANTORINI when it shifted in. Sent for sampling post-race.

Taken back from gate 10, raced 2 wide at rear, 7 lengths back, same margin back on turn, passed some tired runners in straight.

Jumped with them, sent forward to take the lead, led by 1-1/2L turning in, peaked and headed 250M, weakened final 150M. (See Racing Incidents.)

After the event, M Chadwick reported that he was obliged to make some use of his mount in the early stages to go forward and cross GALE SAGA. He said with the pace of the event being run slightly inside of standard time in the middle stages, PATCH OF TIME then did not respond to his riding in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Quickly into stride, raced in 3rd, 2 wide, 1 to 2 lengths back turning in, hit the front 250M, kept on well to the line and scored.

Jumped only fairly and shortly after the start was bumped by GALE SAGA. In the early stages raced keenly and for some distance near the 900 Metres was steadied to avoid NOBLE FANS. When under pressure in the Home Straight hung in and for some distance after the 400 Metres was reluctant to shift to the outside of PHOENIX LIGHT.

Away well, raced 2 wide in midfield, 5 lengths back turning in, made some progress in straight.

Approaching the 200 Metres YUEN LONG ELITE (Z Purton) endeavoured to improve into a tight run between SANTORINI and PATCH OF TIME where, in the opinion of the Stewards, there was not sufficient room. As a result, YUEN LONG ELITE was then checked to avoid PATCH OF TIME when that runner shifted in slightly whilst it was giving ground. As a consequence, YUEN LONG ELITE made contact with SANTORINI which became unbalanced. Z Purton was advised to exercise more care and to ensure that there is sufficient room when improving into runs. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Raced wide and without cover for the majority of the event. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race revealed that the horse was displaying an irregular heart rhythm. Before being allowed to race again, ORIENTAL SURPRISE will be required to perform satisfactorily in a barrier trial and be subjected to an official veterinary examination.
