Approaching the 1500 Metres was steadied to avoid AMAZING AWARD when being shifted behind that runner. After the event, Y L Chung stated that his mount settled back in the field and found it difficult to make up ground in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings. Sent for sampling post-race.

After the event, M Chadwick confirmed that the instructions were to take up a forward position. He said after obtaining a position with cover behind the leaders SURE JOYFUL came under pressure along the Back Straight and finished the race off only fairly in the Home Straight. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.

Moderately away from gate 1, positioned 1-1/2L behind the leader on the inside, saved ground on turn, kept on well in straight but always held.

After the event, L Hewitson stated that the intention was to hold a handy position. He said SMILING EMPEROR jumped only fairly and as a result settled further back in the field than intended. He said SMILING EMPEROR raced too keenly throughout the early and middle stages and after being crowded on the Home Turn when racing tight between THESIS and STORMI (C L Chau) which shifted out, his mount was unable to finish the race off thereafter. C L Chau was advised to exercise more care. A veterinary inspection immediately following the race did not show any significant findings.
