Incident Report
When questioned B Thompson stated that he had expected to lead the event from an inside barrier. He said in the early stages as he was aware LUCKY BANNER can race keenly he did not push his mount to hold the lead and LUCKY BANNER was able to show its natural speed to obtain the front. He said in the early stages LUCKY BANNER then commenced to race keenly and made the turn into the Home Straight on the first occasion awkwardly. He added that whilst he was aware LUCKY BANNER was setting a fast pace inside of standard time throughout the early stages the horse would not respond to his efforts to restrain and set a more sustainable pace. He said it was not until near the 1200 Metres that LUCKY BANNER responded to his efforts to come back and having regard to the way it raced in the early stages the horse was left without a finishing effort in the Home Straight. After considering his explanation and viewing the patrol films the Stewards were satisfied that Jockey Thompson had made his best endeavours to reduce the pace that the horse set in the early stages.
