PINATUBO was owned by Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby with 7 wins, 2 seconds and 1 third in 10 starts, winning distance from 1200M to 1400M. Partnered by James Doyle for his first four starts as a 2YO, his early victories included the Listed Chesham Stakes during the Royal Ascot meeting and the G2 Vintage Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. From his fifth start onward, William Buick took over the reins, guiding him to successive Group 1 triumphs in the National Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes. Unbeaten in six starts during a brilliant juvenile campaign, he was crowned the 2019 Cartier Champion Two-year-old-Colt. He achieved a peak international 2yo rating of 128, making him the highest-rated juvenile in the world since CELTIC SWING (130) in 1994. Due to the pandemic, The 2000 Guineas 2020 was postponed by a month. Making his seasonal reappearance as an overwhelming favourite, PINATUBO suffered his first career defeat when finishing third behind KAMEKO. He shifted focus to the St James's Palace Stakes where he finished second to the future champion miler, PALACE PIER. Following a brief freshen-up, he dropped back to 1,400 meters to contest the Prix Jean Prat, comfortably securing his third Group 1 victory. In his final career start, the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp, he reunited with James Doyle but had to settle for second behind the older horse PERSIAN KING. Following his retirement, the son of SHAMARDAL returned to his owner’s operation at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket, UK.To date, he has sired 9 black-type stakes winners, and his fee for 2026 is GBP£ 17,500. GOLDEN GUNNERS was sold at EUR€ 200,000 in 2024 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale. He is the first progeny of PINATUBO to race in Hong Kong. His dam WAILA won twice from 2000M to 2400M and also placed at 2800M. She has produced INFINITE COSMOS, a winner over 2000M, as well as HAVAILA, a hurdle race runner. Furthermore, other prominent family members, such as CRYSTAL OCEAN and HILLSTAR are both genuine 2400M stayer. The chestnut gelding is expected to be somewhat slow-maturing, and once fully mature, he should be most suited over 1600M or farther.
