Odds Movement as Information
One of the most valuable data sources we use at OddsFlow isn't the odds themselves—it's how they *change* over time. Odds movement reveals information that static snapshots miss.
When I first started tracking odds, I treated opening prices as the "true" values. That was a mistake. Markets learn and adjust. The evolution of prices from opening to kickoff often tells a richer story than any single price point.
Why Prices Move
1. New Information
- Lineup announcements (1-2 hours before kickoff)
- Late injury news
- Weather updates
- Tactical leaks
2. Market Efficiency Correction
Opening odds are set by models. As sophisticated participants (often called "sharps") place bets, they reveal information about model errors. Markets adjust toward true probabilities.3. Volume Imbalances
When significantly more money comes in on one side, operators adjust prices to balance their exposure. This movement may or may not reflect new information.Movement Types and Their Meaning
| Pattern | What It Often Indicates |
| Sharp early move | Sophisticated money found value |
| Gradual drift | Accumulation of one-sided action |
| Late reversal | New information (lineup, weather) |
| Synchronized move | Industry-wide adjustment |
Using Movement in Models
At OddsFlow, we extract several features from odds movement:
Opening-to-current delta: How much has the price moved? Large moves in one direction signal information flow.
Movement timing: Early moves (>24h before kickoff) weight differently than late moves.
Movement correlation: When Asian Handicap moves but 1X2 doesn't, that divergence can be informative.
Movement velocity: Sudden vs gradual changes have different implications.
A Practical Example
Opening odds: Home 2.20
| Draw 3.40 |
24 hours later: Home 2.05
| Draw 3.50 |
What this tells us:
- Market has gained confidence in Home win
- Approximately 7% probability shift toward Home
- Could be information-driven or volume-driven
The key question: Does our model agree? If we predicted Home at 2.30 and market moved to 2.05, either the market knows something we don't, or there's potential value on the other side.
