Julian Nagelsmann
German • 4-2-3-1 • Since September 2023
Julian Nagelsmann is the youngest manager at the 2026 World Cup (38 years old) and arguably the most tactically innovative. Appointed in September 2023 after Germany's Euro 2024 quarter-final exit, Nagelsmann has rebuilt the team around the extraordinary creative partnership of Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz — two young stars whose combined market value exceeds 220 million euros. His most controversial decisions: playing Joshua Kimmich at right-back (his club position is central midfield at Bayern Munich) and bringing Manuel Neuer (age 40) out of international retirement.
経歴: Nagelsmann previously managed Hoffenheim (youngest-ever Bundesliga manager at 28), RB Leipzig (Champions League semi-finals 2020), and Bayern Munich (Bundesliga 2022). He was sacked by Bayern in March 2023 before being appointed by Germany six months later.
戦術分析
Nagelsmann's 4-2-3-1 features one of the most fascinating positional mismatches in international football: Kimmich, who plays central midfield at Bayern under Kompany, is deployed at right-back for Germany because there is no viable alternative. This means Germany sacrifice Kimmich's midfield quality to fill a positional gap. Wirtz faces a similar issue: he plays as the #10 at Liverpool but is pushed to the left for Germany to accommodate Musiala in the central #10 role. The Goretzka-Pavlovic double pivot provides the defensive platform that allows Germany's creative players freedom.
Musiala's fitness is Germany's biggest question mark. He suffered a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup in July 2025 and was sidelined for 6 months. He has returned but managed only 21 appearances (13 starts) with 5 goals and 5 assists. If Musiala is not fully fit, Germany lose the creative heartbeat of their entire system.
