City currently occupy a top-four position, but the gap above and below them in the standings is tight enough that every result in the run-in matters. A slip — two or three dropped points in games they should win — could leave them fighting for a top-five or even top-six finish. The Chelsea fixture on Sunday 12 April is the clearest immediate test. It is an away game, at a hostile ground, against a team that will be highly motivated by the need to make a statement. City need the three points to maintain the buffer they have built. Guardiola's squad management over the remaining weeks will be watched closely. He has to balance Premier League points with whatever remains in European competition. Getting that balance right — keeping the squad fresh and focussed without sacrificing domestic results — is the challenge of the run-in. The Citizens' season is not yet defined.
